I had a great experience at the State Game Lodge, where I enjoyed the unique atmosphere of staying right in the park. The cabins were spacious and felt nicely private, which allowed me to relax and even see some bison from my porch! However, I did find the price a bit steep for the basic amenities. Overall, it’s a splurge worth considering for a memorable stay in nature.
Rooms
8.0
The cabins were typical for a lodge stay, featuring two beds and a well-appointed bathroom. I found the accommodations comfortable, though the pricing seemed a bit high for what's offered.
Service
7.0
The service was pleasant, and the staff demonstrated genuine enthusiasm for the park. However, I did notice some instances where my needs weren't fully addressed.
Location
9.0
The location is fantastic, providing direct access to Custer State Park and surrounding attractions. It felt great being a part of nature, and the setting was beautiful, though getting around the area was somewhat tricky.
Dining
5.0
The dining options were a bit limited, especially when it came to dinner reservations, which was disappointing. Breakfast was decent but did not start early enough for early park excursions.
Facilities
7.0
Facilities were standard for a lodge, with essential amenities like a picnic table and firepit outside the cabins. The overall ambiance was certainly cozy, but I wish there were more recreational options.

We enjoyed our stay, taking in the historic charm of the lodge while being right in the heart of Custer State Park. The rooms had a lovely view and the lobby was full of character, but they were quite outdated and lacked some modern comforts. Dining was good, although the choices were limited due to the lodge's remote location. Overall, it was a unique experience, but not ideal for those seeking luxury.
Rooms
6.0
Our room was clean and had a beautiful view, but it was quite outdated with a small bathroom and not enough comfort for a premium experience.
Service
7.0
Service was generally good, but we encountered one staff member at the front desk who was less than welcoming, which was surprising given the otherwise nice hospitality from the rest of the staff.
Location
9.0
The location is fantastic, nestled within Custer State Park and ideal for wildlife watching right outside the room.
Dining
7.0
The dining was good, especially the bison dish, but options were limited due to the lodge's isolation.
Facilities
6.0
The lodge had a historic charm, but amenities like elevators and modern bathrooms were lacking.

The lodge is steeped in history as it was once a Summer White House for President Coolidge, offering a tranquil view of the surrounding park. The room we stayed in was comfortable and nicely furnished, although we were disappointed by the lack of complimentary coffee and breakfast. The staff was accommodating and handled our reservation hiccup well, and the overall experience was enjoyable despite the minor inconveniences.
Rooms
8.0
The room was lovely and comfortable but had a slightly worn bathroom.
Service

The management was very attentive and took great care of us, especially in resolving our reservation issues.

Staying at the lodge was a unique experience, especially with the bison roaming the parking lot. The historic charm adds to its appeal, but the accommodations were a bit rustic and could use some updates. The location near wildlife and the dining experience had its highs and lows, making it an interesting stay overall.
Rooms
7.0
The rooms were clean but a bit dark, offering a rustic charm. The view of the bison outside was a highlight, but the size of the bathroom was a downside.
Service
6.0
Service varied; while the dinner server was great, other staff seemed untrained and not very attentive during my dining experience.
Location
9.0
The location is fantastic for exploring nearby wildlife and attractions like Mount Rushmore, making it a perfect base for adventures.
Dining
5.0
Dining had its moments; dinner was enjoyable, but the wait times and lack of attention made the experience frustrating at times.
Facilities
6.0
The facilities have a nice historic feel but could benefit from modernization, especially in the guest rooms.
